Husband sends triple talaq to Pune wife on WhatsApp

- NARSI BENWAL

A 20-year-old woman from Pune has moved court after her husband divorced her by texting talaq three times on WhatsApp.

“I got married in April, 2016. For the first two months, my husband was quite loving. But soon after I conceived, his behaviour changed,” Sadiya Khan said on Saturday.

“I was seven months pregnant and my in-laws asked me to go to my parent’s home for a few days. After spending some days, I told my husband to bring me to my paternal home. He refused and asked me to bring Rs 2 lakh if I wanted to return,” she added.

Even as her husband kept on demanding money, Sadiya refused to shell out anything and went to his house despite being oppsed by her in-laws. “The moment I entered my husband’s house, my in-laws thrashed me and forcibly poured shampoo in my mouth. I was thrown out of the house and had no other option but to go back to my parent’s place,” she said.

“Soon after, I received the talaq message on WhatsApp. I felt helpless,” she added.

Making a pitch for justice for Muslim women, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently called upon reformers from the Muslim community to “come forward to protect daughters from the ill-effects” of triple talaq and urged them “to not allow the issue to get politicised”.

Modi asked people to find a way to protect Muslim daughters and lead the way for people around the world.
