FROM THE Man sent to jail for not paying maintenance to former wife
The Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Sewree in Mumbai on Saturday awarded 30-days imprisonment to one Mujibur Rehman Barkatali Ansari for not paying dues to his former wife.
A distress warrant was issued to Ansari for failing to pay modified rent of Rs 4.70 lakh to his former wife Sayeeda Banu who lives with two children separately after her divorce from Ansari.
Ansari married another woman, having three children resides in Kurla.
After the divorce, Sayeeda had approached the Sessions Court in 2009. On August 11, 2016, the court had modified the rent amount from Rs 5000 to Rs 10,000. Ansari has not been paying rent to her since July 26, 2013. The court also directed him to pay her a monthly maintenance of Rs 4000.
The additional magistrate SU Hake awarded a simple 30-day imprisonment to Ansari. Records shows that he has four houses in Kurla of which three are on rent. Ansari, a businessman, has recently sold his his property in Uttar Pradesh.
Sayeeda's advocate Farhana Shah said, "Ansari did not adhere to court orders of paying Sayeeda the rent. Also he has not paid maintenance to her for four months which amounts to Rs 16,000. He has not been paying for the rent amounting Rs 4.70 lakh. In total Ansari owes Rs 4.86 lakh to Sayeeda."
"The documents on record shows that Ansari sold his Uttar Pradesh property for about Rs 32 lakh.
