A 27-year- old man was set on fire and hospitalized in a critical condition with 65% burns at Agripada here allegedly by his wife and her family after he pointed out her extra-marital affairs.

The man, identified as Emran Anwar Ali Khan (27), had already filed a complaint against her wife’s extra-marital affairs with the Malwani police in April. He charged his wife with mentally and physically torturing him.

On Thursday around 3 p.m. at their Kalapani Chawl rented flat in Agripada, the victim, a tailor by profession, had a quarrel with his wife after which she reportedly set him on fire. He was admitted to Kasturba Hospital.

Vicky Sharma, the advocate of the victim, said, “My client Emran has been staying with his wife Farheen Emran Khan at the rented flat at Kalapani chawl. Six persons from Farheen’s family were present when Emran was set ablaze at his residence at 3 p.m. on Thursday. When my client’s brother Salman asked Emran at the hospital if he himself set him ablaze, he replied in the negative.

“When he asked Emran if it was the handiwork of his wife and in-laws, he raised his fingers and replied in the affirmative,” the lawyer said.

On April 1, Khan had registered a non-cognisable complaint with the Malwani police station against his wife Farheen for criminal breach of trust and cheating. Emran and Farheen got married on March 10 this year. After marriage, Emran was staying at Malwani along with his wife and her family.

According to the complaint registered by Emran with the Malwani police (A copy of which is available with the FPJ), “Farheen cheated me by not disclosing her past and present relationship with her boyfriend. Ever since I came to know about her affair, she has been threatening me and my family of dire consequences. She had been in touch with her boyfriend even after she was married to me. She spends the entire day over the phone with her boyfriend.”

Senior Police Inspector Ashok Sarambalkar of Agripada refused to comment.
