- STAFF REPORTER

A 21-year-old woman who attempted to commit suicide by trying to jump off the Mulund-Airoli bridge was saved by the Navghar police on Wednesday night. The woman, the sole breadwinner in her family, was depressed due to family responsibilities.

Seema Saxena (name changed) was spotted by a few passers-by at the Airoli brigde. A Good Samaritan informed the control room which in turn informed the Navghar police about it. At around 1.30 am, a team was dispatched immediately to the spot. When the woman was about to jump, sub-inspector Priyanka Kharatmal stopped her in the nick of time and brought her to the police station.

According to the police, the woman told the cops she wanted to commit suicide because she couldn’t take on the responsibility of her family.

Saxena, a resident of Chinchpada at Airoli in Navi Mumbai, is a school dropout. She has studied up to standard eight. Her father passed away four years ago and her mother has been suffering from an illness. Her younger sister has a brain tumor.

Sub-Inspector Priyanka Kharatmal counselled the woman for an hour at the police station. The woman told the police that she had no job and her family was heavily dependent on her. Subsequently, the police informed her family and sent her home.

According to Sachin Patil, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 7, “The lady has been reunited with her family members at her residence in Navi Mumbai. We are happy that the efforts of the team were successful and we could save her life.”
