Final FYJC admission list out, left-out students pray for a miracle

- RONALD RODRIGUES

After the third merit list for the degree college admissions was released, students whose names have not appeared in all three lists rushed to colleges with a hope of securing admissions. Colleges though focussing on merit have acknowledged the dilemma of these students but are helpless. However, they promised to come out with a new wait list if possible.

These students accompanied by their parents persuaded the college authorities to secure the admissions so that they do not lose academic years.

On the other hand, the colleges said are helpless as they can give admissions only on the basis of merit and according to the number of available seats. Moreover, by the time the third merit list, which was declared on July 1, was out, most seats in all colleges have been filled. The seats are full as 50 per cent are occupied by minority students.

Marie Fernandes, Principal of St. Andrew’s College said, “Both students and parents are requesting for seats in courses like BCom (Bachelor of Commerce), BMS (Bachelor of Management Studies) and BAF (Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance). We will check the availability of seats and put out a wait list for these students.”

Other colleges said they are bound by the limited intake capacity as almost all institutes have a particular minority quota which makes it difficult for the open category students.

Parag Ajagaonkar, Principal of NM College, said, “We will check the number of students that are already admitted as July 5 is the last day for them to secure their admissions. Only after we analysed this data we will be in a position to decide on the students who have not managed to get their names on any of the merit lists.”

The students hope that a fourth merit list or a wait list will be declared by the colleges. They said, “The percentage secured by a large number of students is high this year. And added to it are minority and other reservations which takes up the seats and we are left with no option. We just hope the colleges consider us and help us with admissions as there are some students who shift and withdraw admissions.”

Colleges are also helpless as most of the seats have been filled through minority and other reservations but some of them promised to come out with a fourth list after a final assessment of the number of seats filled
