- STAFF REPORTER ● Mumbai

The 18-year-old son of a senior IAS couple from Maharashtra allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a high-rise on Tuesday, police said.

Manmat Mhaiskar, the only child of his parents, allegedly jumped from the Dariya Mahal building at Nepean Sea Road in the Malabar Hill area at around 8 am, police said.

He lived with his parents in the Marine Lines area, the official said.

Sources said Manmat was studying in Pune and had recently come to Mumbai to meet his parents and a friend.

According to Malabar Hill police, Manmath left his home saying that he was going to meet a friend. Barely half-an-hour later, he allegedly jumped off the Dariya Mahal building on Napean Sea Road. He suffered serious head injuries and succumbed instantly.

After his identity was verified, the parents were informed and the body sent for autopsy to Sir J.J. Hospital. Police have registered an accidental death report and are making further investigations. Police have detained two of his friends to unravel the motive behind the suspected suicide.

Manmat’s father Milind Mhaiskar is the vice-president of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and mother Manisha, the principal secretary of the urban development department.

“Manmat lived with his parents in Blue Heaven apartment at Marine Lines. He left his home in the morning at 7 am. At 7.30 am, the Malabar Hill police station received a call from the guard,” Rashmi Karandikar, the Mumbai Police spokesperson, said.
