Biometric survey of BDD chawl at Worli delayed

- SAGAR PILLAI ● Mumbai

Along with a poor response to the tenders of redevelopment project of Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) chawls, the biometric survey of 121 buildings at Worli has also been delayed. The survey was supposed to start from the second week of this month.

The biometric survey will decide the eligible beneficiaries of the residents who will be rehabilitated to the redeveloped structure. While other redevelopment projects have received response from bidders, MHADA officials did not confirm on the biometric survey of the chawls.

A senior MHADA official said, “The survey will be started once the projects are awarded to the developer.”

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority received zero response to the third call of the redevelopment project. MHADA officials confirmed that the tenders of the redevelopment project have been extended by 10 days. This is one of the most ambitious projects in central Mumbai whose tenders are worth Rs 9,000 crore.

The project involves the entire revamp of around 121 buildings at Worli which is spread across over 50 acres of land. Apart from rehousing the existing tenants in the redeveloped structure, the project will also create 16,000 affordable houses. The existing tenant will receive a 500 square feet apartment each in the redeveloped structure.

The Free Press Journal had earlier reported that the protest of Chawl residents has been cited as a major reason behind the poor response of tenders. However, the officials had rubbished such claims stating that the bidders have requested for an extension.

The official said, “Since it is a huge project, the firms need more time to bid for the project. Moreover, they are looking forward to rope in an international firm to carry out the entire redevelopment work because of which the tenders of the project have been extended till July 27.”
