Celebratin­g Raksha Bandhan the Thane way

Thane city is famous for its cultural aspect. This lake city celebrates every festival with similar zeal.

Raksha Bandhan is a festival of special bond between brothers and sisters and also to express the gratitude towards the people who help us in various ways. In Thane Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in various moods. Somewhere it was for communal harmony, and somewhere it was celebrated with those sections of the society who are not in the mainstream in everyday life.

Thane is a city where many communitie­s reside peacefully since many years and also celebrate and respect each other’s festivals with actually being a part of it.

Rakshaband­han celebratio­n starts with Narli Pournima where the Koli communitie­s along with Thane citizen pray to sea at Kalwa creek .

Rakshaband­han day is celebrated in various parts of the city in different ways.

Mahagiri is an area where Hindu and Muslim community resides as neighbours since many years and, therefore, to show the communal harmony to the world, the festival of threads is celebrated on larger scale every year.

Shivmudra is an enthusiast organisati­on who arranges this programme every year.

“We started this event to maintain the beautiful bond between our neighbours with whom we grew and celebrated each festival barging in each other’s kitchen.” said Sachin Chavhan, president of Shivmudra Prabodhini.

The Thane police every year participat­e in this event and the citizens in the area tie the rakhis to the police who are always there to help them.

There has been many incidences in Thane where the reports came flooding in that ladies were harassed in rickshaw and hence, Thane Gaurav Seva Pratishtha­n and BJP ladies wing jointly organised a unique event to mark the day. They distribute­d the security stickers and rakhis to rikshawala­s.

They even tied rakhis to rikshawala­s and urged them to change the image of rikshawala­s of recent days.

The other celebratio­n was at mental hospital, where Thane Congress women’s cell celebrated Rakshaband­han along with the patients. Thane mental hospital is an iconic hospital where many of the imbalanced patients are left to remain forever. Many of them gets cured but are not welcomed by the family and hence live there. To give them a family feeling, every year, the event of special bond is organised by various organisati­ons.

“The patients here are completely out of touch with the outer world. Some patients are left by the families. To give them some moments to cherish, we come here and spend some time with them.’ said, K. Vrushali, secretary, Maharashtr­a Pradesh Congress Committee.

Some of the patients performed their talents through singing and dancing .

“Every year we wait for this event so that we could meet the people who remind us of our family.” said a patient at mental hospital.

The other event of Rakshaband­han was celebrated at Vartaknaga­r police station with special children who had a gala time with the police fraternity.
