Hyderabad techie arrested for stalking woman in Amboli
A 37-year-old IT professional from Hyderabad has been arrested from Lubna apartment at Mumbai’s Malad (west) for stalking a 34-yearold woman, who has questioned women’s safety in the city on her Facebook wall. Later the victim thanked Mumbai police after the accused Nitish Shri Govind Dev Sharma was caught.
Sharma, who is holidaying in Mumbai at his relative’s house for the last four days, chased the woman in a car till her house at Veera Desai Road in Jogeshwari (West) while she was returning home from Andheri’s Seven Bungalows in her car with her two children and her sister in the wee hours of Monday.
The accused followed the victim’s car till her house and rang her door bell at 2 am. After this hair-raising incident, the woman, who is from Dehradun and has been living in Mumbai for the past 10 years, posted on her Facebook wall: “This is shocking and nerve wrecking! In the last 10 years, I’ve always felt safe in Bombay, and in the same breath have always cursed Delhi! But last night showed me a different side to my ‘not so safe anymore’ city! 2 women and 2 kids in a car together don’t stop a random man from stalking and following you up to your house and ringing your door bell at 2am!”
“He didn’t have any fear in his eyes, a fear of being captured by security cameras, interrogation by security guards or threats of Police! He just hung around coolly in his car long after the incident very comfortable in getting his pictures clicked!” she added.
Along with the message, the woman had also posted two photographs of the accused who is seen sitting behind the wheel in his car, whose one digit on the front number plate he had removed to avoid being traced by the police. However, the rear number plate helped police to track him down.
Next morning the woman reached Amboli police station and registered the complaint against the accused and handed over the photographs.
The investigating team, led by encounter specialist Daya Nayak, studied the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed between the stretch of Andheri’s Seven Bungalows and Veera Desai Road in which Sharma is seen following the victim’s car till her house.
The police have seized the car and booked Sharma under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC), including stalking and trespassing. Sharma was produced before a court that has remanded him in one day’s police custody.
