The Centre has asserted that new notes have single unique dimension and there are no discrepancies in their sizes
Row over two sizes of new Rs 500, Rs 1,000 notes
Congress lawyer-turned MP Kapil Sibal on Tuesday threw a sensational bombshell of two sets of new currency notes printed in two different sizes and designs, triggering a ruckus and four short adjournments and finally the House shut without transacting regular business. However, the government asserted that notes have single unique dimension.
Parliament reassembling after a 3day recess found the scene no different in the Lok Sabha which too was adjourned for the day shortly. Sibal raised the currency issue as soon as the Rajya Sabha met, claiming the secret of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 is out and that the government got the new notes printed in two sizes and features and one set of the notes went to the BJP workers.
Deputy Chairman P J Kurien tried to block Sibal, saying it cannot be a subject of the point of order he had raised, while Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and MoS Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi strongly objected to Sibal’s claim. Sibal, however, got support from Trinamool's Derek O'Brien, deputy Congress leader Anand Sharma, Janata Dal-U's Sharad Yadav and Opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who said the government involved in the currency manipulation has no reason to remain in power for even five minutes, describing the disclosure as "the biggest scam of century."
Sharad Yadav showed which side he stands by rapping the government for printing two types of the currency notes in the same series and asserting that the notes cannot be of different size and features.
Meanwhile, the government asserted that the new 500 and 2,000 rupee notes have single unique dimension.
