Metro III affected residents to be shifted to two areas

- STAFF REPORTER

Residents or Project Affected People (PAP) at GirgaonKalbadevi area due to the Metro III will be rehabilitated and will be relocated to the same area by 2021. The MMRC has appointed architect G D Sambhare and R H Mahimatura to provide architectural, design and planning and construction supervision (PMC) services for this in-situ rehabilitation scheme.

Around 293 residential families and 341 commercial structures will be affected by this line. Also, 19 buildings will be demolished and redeveloped at this area as the project needs land for construction. An area of 2,600 square metre is required for these two metro stations at Girgaon and Kalbadevi.

Residents of these areas will be rehabilitated to various clusters and six have been planned (three at each station). All of them would be provided residences in one building itself and the remaining would be used for commercial development.

Some residents were given option of moving into the MHADA tenements at Pimpalwadi and Wadala areas and have opted for it. Others have decided to find places on their own with MMRC providing rent till the project work is on.

The MMRC said its major work will begin once the residents are relocated. MMRC Managing Director Ashwini Bhide said, “We can start major work only once the buildings are vacated and the residents are relocated. Now that we have appointed architects we hope to speed up this process. Our aim is to acquire space for our project work and also facilitate in-situ rehabilitation of the PAPs.”

The total budget for the entire rehabilitation work is Rs 7,000 crore. The architects have been appointed by online bids for Rs 6.21 crore. “The rehabilitation work is going on under 33(7) Development Control Regulations (DCR) 1991 and we are awaiting the No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from MHADA. We are also conducting negotiations and talks with landowners and have set up an office at Kalbadevi to deal with issues faced by the residents,” Bhide added.

Redevelopment of these residential buildings and commercial structures will be undertaken simultaneously along with the construction work of the Metro line. After completion, the space will be allotted to the PAPs so that the residents get timely possession of their homes.
