Ocean of Creation
WHAT: ‘Ocean of Creation’, an exhibition of paintings by Late veteran artist Shamendu Sonavane. This exhibition is a retrospective tribute to Shamendu Sonavane’s art. This show will be inaugurated by Advocate Kumar Desai October 31 at 5 pm. Shamendu Sonavane was born in 1956 in Mehunbare near Chalisgaon in Jalgoan district of northern Maharashtra and grew up under such deep spiritual and cultural influences. Blessed with precocious talent, he studied art in Aurangabad and later came to Mumbai’s prestigious Sir J. J. School of art to do his G.D in art and Diploma in art education in ’78-’79. Shamendu won early notice with his striking portraits, sketches and figuratives. He showed a keen eye for detail and a relentless zeal for innovation. In due course he made a mark as a gifted landscapist producing expressive works like “Cyclone 77”, “Nature”,“Way of life” and “Space 6” which were full of raw passion and captured the grandeur and beauty of nature. It won him the Bombay Art Society, Art Society of India and Maharashtra state awards in 1977. Shamendu’s art evolved under the tutelage of master artists like Gopal Adivrekar and Prabhakar Barwe in the 80’s when he joined the elite group of artists hired by the Weavers Centre set up by the government in 1956 under Pupul Jayakar to revive the lost art of fabric design.
