St. Elias, Don Bosco emerge champions

Eighth seeds India, who put up a superlative show to oust Germany on Thursday night, saw both singles specialists Saurav Ghosal and Harinderpal Sandhu losing their opening matches.World No.6 Nick Matthew overcame No.16 Ghosal 3-2 (11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9 in 76 minutes to give England a crucial lead. Then, world No.15 Daryl Delby crushed No.52 Harinderpal Sandhu 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-2) in only 38 minutes to end India's run in the biennial competition of the World Squash Federation (WSF). MUMBAI: ICL-Payyade SC romped to a comfortable 3-0 win against Vintage Dahisar SC in a First Division match of the MDFA League 2017-2018 and played at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel. Strikers Inder S. Khabra, Sumedh K. and Michael I. struck a goal each for the victors. In a second division encounter, Classic SC scored an identical 3-0 victory against Sagar Mitra Mandal ‘B’ with Tarique Shaikh, Faizan Ansari and Zain Khan, all scoring a goal each to complete the win. St.Elias High School, Khar, and Don Bosco High School, Matunga bagged the girls’ and boys’ crowns respectively in the MHAL organized Inter-Schools (Boys’ and Girls’ Under-16) Hockey Tournament played at the MHAL-Mahindra Stadium, Churchgate.
In the girls’ final, St. Elias enjoyed total domination and scored twice in each half to charge to a convincing 4-0 win against Duruelo Convent High School, Bandra.
The Khar schoolgirls, which showed good teamwork and combined like a well-oiled machine, got their goals through
Sharadha Haldankar, Akanksha Daphale, Priyanka Mhatre and Aradhna Jadhav.
In the boys’ summit clash, Don Bosco rode on the twin strikes from Faizuddin Siddique to overcome St. Stanislaus, Bandra 2-0. After a barren first 44 minutes, Don Bosco earned a penalty stroke and Faizuddin successfully converted to take the lead. Four minutes later he scored from a field effort to double the lead and seal victory for the Matunga boys.
Both the St. Elias and Don Bosco were presented with the ‘Champions’ trophies and a cheque of Rs 10,000 each. Duruelo Convent and St. Stanislaus received the runners-up trophies and a cheque of Rs 5,000 each.
The individual award winners in the girls’ category were, Best goalkeeper: Reeba Shaikh (Duruelo Convent); Best defender: Harshada Dhantwale (St. Elias); Best midfielder: Aradhana Jadhav (St. Elias) and Best forward: Saniya Giri (St John’s).
Best goalkeeper: Priyansh Harjai (Don Bosco); Best defender: Yash Jadhav (Don Bosco); Best midfielder: Noah D’Mello (St. Stanislaus); Best forward: Bris Benson (Don Bosco). All the individual winners received a cash award of Rs 1,000 each.
