Slum dwellers stage protest demanding new developer

- STAFF REPORTER

At least 200 slum dwellers staying in a temporary accommodation in Parel gathered in front of Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) office to protest against non-payment of rent for past two years by their developer. They also demanded SRA to appoint a new developer as the current developer failed to complete the project.

These slum dwellers have been staying in a temporary accommodation provided by SRA in Parel Loksabha Housing Society. These slum dwellers alleged that a developer belonging to Neumec Group had delayed in paying the rent amount to the slum dwellers for staying in the temporary accommodation.

“We are protesting as the developer had only provided us with rent amount for 18 months and delayed in paying the remaining amount to us. We are set to be rehabilitated in a new building at Worli which is located next to a shopping complex. The developer has also not completed the project work handed over to him,” said Pravin Yerunkar, a resident from Parel Loksabha Housing Society.

The project was handed over to the developer in 2012 and at least 200 slum dwellers were accommodated in Parel in 2013. “The developer is yet to clear the area in order to begin the construction work of the new building in Worli. We demand for change of the developer under section 13 (2) of the Slum Rehabilitation Rules of 1971.
