Teachers complain as colleges to remain open till mid-May

- RONALD RODRIGUES

Teachers of all degree colleges have raised an issue about the academic year being extended till mid May by Mumbai University (MU) to complete assessment. The assessment of both winter and summer semester examinations is going on and teachers claimed that they are missing out on their summer vacation due to this extension.

All colleges have been notified by the university to continue the academic year till May 15 instead of shutting down on May 1 while law colleges have been notified to function till May 19. This extension has been introduced so that teachers can focus on completing assessment of pending answer scripts of the law course as part of the backlog of winter semester examinations.

Around 13,000 answer scripts of law courses are pending to be assessed. Arjun Ghatule, in-charge Director and Controller of Board of Examination of MU, said, “We have informed all principals and colleges to complete assessment of law courses on a priority basis. There is a backlog and teachers need to complete it before the summer vacation begins.”

compromised even last year due to the errors and technical glitches in online assessment. A teacher said, “We did not get our vacations even last year as we had to struggle with completing the assessment despite several errors in the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. And now this year too we have to work till mid-May. Some of us had already planned our holidays and now we have to change as examinations and assessment are our priority. We are concerned about our students and we will contribute our efforts.”

In addition, around 30 exams of the summer semester were postponed which further pushed the academic year till June.
