Supporting document for gender not needed for PAN in transgender category: I-T

Congress to win 115-120 seats in K’taka, says Patel

- R K MISRA AGENCIES /

Congress leader Ahmed Patel has predicted a hand down victory for the Congress in Karnataka, bagging one hundred and fifteen or more seats in a house of 224. “We will get absolute majority and the BJP will not be able to cross sixty five seats”,he told mediapersons here on Wednesday.

Patel was in the state capital leading a delegation of his state party leaders and farmers to submit a memorandum to Governor O P Kohli on issues concerning the state's farming community and land acquisition which effects them majorly.

Patel defended Rahul Gandhi's statement that he was a prospective prime ministerial aspirant stating that it needs to be seen in proper perspective. “If the congress gets a majority on it's own then being the president of the party he becomes a prime ministerial candidate”, he added.

Patel made it clear that his party would support the farmers movement to be organized in Palghar in Maharashtra on on June 3rd against the move to acquire land for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project. The Income Tax department on Wednesday said those seeking a PAN card under the transgender category do not need to furnish any documents specifying their gender.

Supporting documents will not be needed in the filing of fresh application or for those wishing to change their sex in an existing card, it clarified.

The department had on April 10 amended Income Tax (I-T) rules to allow members of the transgender community to be recognised as an independent category of applicants for a Permanent Account Number (PAN) needed for tax-related transactions and other functions.

Till now, PAN application forms only specified two gender categories -- male and female.

The CBDT had effected the change in view of representations from the transgender community.

"New PAN allotment and change request applications with gender as transgender is allowed without hassle. Also, there is no requirement of depositing any supporting document for change of gender to transgnder...," the department on Wednesday said in an advisory.

PAN is a 10-digit unique alphanumeric number allotted by the I-T department to individuals and entities.
