Inquiry report states she consumed anti-depressant­s outside Byculla jail

An inquiry report has been submitted to B K Upadhyay, Additional Director General of Prisons in Indrani Mukerjea drug overdose incident. Indrani, an under-trial at the Byculla jail has been booked on the charges of murder of her daughter Sheena. Indrani was admitted at the Jamshetjee Jeejeebhoy hospital on April 6 for drug overdose.

As per the findings of the inquiry report, Indrani had consumed and accessed the drug bezodiazep­ine, an anti-depressant outside the jail premises and the drug was not prescribed by the jail doctor and jail authoritie­s.

According to Radvardhan Sinha, Inspector General of Prisons,“We have submitted the report to BK Upadhyay last week. The drug was consumed by Indrani outside the jail premises. The report will be submitted this week to the Government.” The report does not state any details regarding how Indrani got access to the drugs or who gave it to her.

“We had checked the CCTV footage of the sessions court during Indrani visit to the court for the trial. We had also checked the inventory of medicines prescribed by the jail doctor. Nothing was missing and neither anything suspicious was found. Diary entries was made regarding the date and time, name of the medicine and the quantity of the medicine given to Indrani everyday,” he added.

Total thirty statements were recorded which included the statements of Indrani, her husband Peter her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna, the escort team and the jail staff were also recorded and submitted as part of the inquiry report. As part of the inquiry, the jail authoritie­s have written to experts seeking advise reading the high drug overdose which were found in Indrani's urine samples. The report was submitted by the Hinduja hospital. Daily three medicines were given to Indrani under the supervisio­n of the jail staff and the jail doctor.
