When did cartoons begin?

It’s difficult to say when exactly the first ever cartoon appeared. But they began to be noticed sometime in the 1750’s. Cartoon strips began in the early 1900’s.

Do we know anything about the earliest cartoonist­s and comic strips?

Benjamin Franklin drew the first cartoon in an American newspaper on May 9, 1754.

Other early names are Hogarth, Goya and Daumier. Buster Brown (1902) and Mutt & Jeff were one of the first daily strips. Bringing up Father (1912) is still popular. Mickey Mouse was born in 1928 and Popeye in 1929.

When did Indian comics make an appearance?

The year 2007 marks 60 years of Indian comics. The first comics appeared in the magazine The

Chandamama in 1947 and were based on the epics. In 1967, India Book House editor Anant Pai launched The Amar Chitra Katha, comics based on Indian mythology and history that were a runaway success.

Who were the pioneering Indian cartoonist­s?

Abid Surti who created the character ‘Dhabbuji’ for Dharamyug magazine in the 1960’s is considered the first. Pran Kumar Sharma, whose ‘Chacha Chowdhary’ in Lotpot magazine became a household name, is also regarded as a pioneer.

What are the parts of a cartoon?

They are: the speech balloon, thought balloon, speed lines and onomatopoe­ic words (e.g. Bang! Thud!)
