Mother dumps foetus in Air Asia lavatory

A new born infant was found lifeless and abandoned in one of the lavatories of an Air Asia plane after it landed in New Delhi from Guwahati on Wednesday afternoon. The flight had originated from Imphal.

The airline said that a medical examination conducted by a doctor at the New Delhi airport confirmed that the baby "had been delivered on board". The matter was immediately reported to the DGCA and the police.

The Delhi Police officers boarded the aircraft once it landed. They were told that the cabin crew was doing a routine check of the lavatories when they found the foetus, believed to be around six months old, wrapped in toilet paper.

The suspect was identified after questioning of all female passengers on board. The baby's mother was believed to have boarded the flight from Guwahati.

AirAsia, in its statement, said that a "suspect" has been held by the police for questioning. The suspect was identified after questioning of all female passengers on board. She turned out to be a 19-year-old Tae-kwon-do player who admitted that she had lost the foetus.

She was supposed to travel to South Korea on Thursday for a tournament and was accompanied by her coach. The coach told the police that he was neither aware of her pregnancy, nor had she revealed about it in documents she had filled for travelling in the flight.
