Rainbow rage

SHIKHA JAIN shares cues to incorporate techni-colour hues in your make-up and wardrobe

-

It all started in order to support the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) movement since the colours of the rainbow are a symbolism of the movement’s freedom flag. In a lot of ways, fashion is intertwined with identity and we have used clothing to express ourselves for centuries. People dress to convey a variety of expressions, from their taste in music, to their history, and their culture. Pride Month is long over, but the beauty that has come along with it is still going strong. Fashion has gone somewhere over the rainbow! From flashy, glittery make-up looks that use every colour of

the rainbow making the wearer look like a magical unicorn, to semi-permanent hair hues spanning the whole rainbow spectrum, the rainbow rage is here to stay. Rainbow clothing, a connotation of pure joy, has become a style symbol of the season. Here’s how you can ace the trend...

Get your colours right

Rainbow make-up is fresh, vibrant and avant garde. It’s for the daring souls and definitely not for the faint-hearted. “This trend can take any make-up look to the next level. For example, super colourful eyes with nude lips can draw a lot of attention, which is a huge plus. Even though, it’s a fad it will still stay here for a couple of seasons. I personally love the rainbow freckles. They are just so sexy,” says make-up artist Unaid Ansari, from Mumbai. “The best thing about rainbow make-up is that there is no rule on how to play with the colours. It’s about being bold, so use it the way you like it. Green, purple, red, blue, aqua...blend them well on the sockets and eyelids. Use colour pencils inside the rim of the lower eye and blend it again with the complementing eye shadow. Use a good coat of mascara and use some pop colours for the lips,” suggests Unaid. Designers are embracing the colours of the rainbow – all together, all at once. From ’70s-inspired tees to technicolour skirts and statement-making striped dresses, it’s a full-on spectrum of colour this season. If Fendi played with contrasts, then Rosie Assoulin delivered juicy hues. Sacai chimed in to join the chorus of candy hues and prep-school worthy stripes. It’s the season to earn your stripes and wear them proud.

“Well, it is very interesting to add colours to your wardrobe. One can team it up with a colourful belt on a flared pants or a nice loose fit shrug with a multicoloured waist belt or a techni-colour skirt with a monochrome shirt,” recommends designer, Swapnil Shinde.

Swapnil also says ushering in the new season, bold and bright rainbow-hued pieces ruled the Spring 2018 runways in the form of show-stopping dresses, T-shirts, and accessories. It is the perfect and most wanted trend of the season.

It’s loud and clear

We might not be able to splash out on Gucci, but we can all get a piece of the rainbow action because there are pieces of multicoloured clothing everywhere right now. From swimsuits to bags, jumpers to dresses, it’s your sparkling new season wardrobe must-have. Whether to celebrate diversity or to make a fashion statement, one thing is certain: The rainbow trend is an instant mood booster.
