16-yr-old Kandivli slum dweller dies of leptospirosis
A 16-year-old Kandivli resident, Tanmay Pradnye, died of leptospirosis on July 28. According to the epidemiology cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), they have not received any information about the seventh death due to leptospirosis. Dr Padmaja Keskar, executive health officer, BMC, has said the death of Tanmay due to leptospirosis is yet to be registered with the public health department.
Tanmay was admitted to a private hospital on July 24 and had been put on ventilator. A doctor from Riddhivinayak Hospital said, "He was admitted to the hospital on July 24. After two days of treatment, he started suffering from multi-organ failure and his condition started deteriorating. He was later on ventilator support and died on July 28."
Tanmay was a brilliant student who had secured 70 per cent marks in SSC exam. On July 15, 2018, he secured admission to study Commerce in Patkar college and was very happy. To celebrate, he and his friends went to a lake near Kandivli’s Shiv temple. Too busy splashing around, the boys failed to see the water from a nullah emptying into the lake.
When he came home, he started vomiting and complained of dizziness. His parents took him to a local hospital where the doctor gave him some medicines and Tanmay felt better for some time. But within a few days, his health deteriorated and he was admitted to Amar Hospital on July 24.
Tests confirmed Tanmay had contracted leptospirosis. However, as Amar Hospital did not have facilities to conduct further tests, on July 25, he was shifted to Riddhi Vinayak Multispeciality Hospital, where he slipped into a coma and his brain and liver stopped functioning. On July 28, around 4 am, he breathed his last in the hospital.
On July 13, a 17-year-old teenager from Worli died of leptospirosis in the tertiary care hospital of BMC. His clinical history stated he had walked through flood waters and had gone on an outing to Worli seaface and other parts of the city during heavy rains. On the third day after his outing, he developed fever and was treated at a BMC dispensary.
