25 bike theft cases registered in last 10 days

MUMBAI: With a series of motorcycle thefts recorded in Malad’s Malvani area, Malvani police have registered 25 complaints of bike thefts in the last 10 days. Police have been scouring the CCTV footage of the vicinity in a bid to identify the accused and nab them. Accordingl­y, the police have also warned the locals to keep their vehicles parked in a safe spot, preferably in the building compounds, while the search for accused is underway. Police sources said the area surroundin­g Malvani Gate No 1 to 3 has been on the radar of motorcycle thefts lately and 25 motorcycle­s of the normal make and model have been reported missing in the last 10 days, between July 23 to August 1. The latest victim of the motorcycle theft was identified as Jamaal Qureshi, who lost his Yamaha FZ S Version 2 worth Rs 90,000 on Wednesday evening. Jamaal said, "I had parked my bike outside the Masjid in Malvani when I had gone to offer prayers. I was hardly gone for 20 minutes and when I returned, I realised my bike is missing." A police official said the cases of motorcycle theft has seen a spurt in the last month, and the police suspect the thefts of these motorcycle­s might be fed to the black market, which uses the original parts of the vehicles to sell them at a higher cost. The Malvani police have been scouring the CCTV footages of the areas where the theft took place, as well as check with the bike garage workers if they saw any suspicious activity relating to the motorcycle in their biker's circuits. Some of the bikes which were stolen from Malvani area were Yamaha FZ S1, Honda CB Hornet, Honda Shine, Honda CBR 150. The estimated amount of the 25 motorcycle­s stolen from Malvani comes around Rs 14.25 lakh.
