- NARENDRA GUPTA /

Thane Police have arrested a-25-year-old man for allegedly stabbing to death a 20year-old girl in Thane on Saturday morning. Police said the incident occurred near the Thane RTO office on Eastern Express Highway near Nitin Junction, as the girl was riding her twowheeler to work.

SD Jadhav, Senior inspector of Bhiwandi-Narpoli police, said, “Based on information, we rushed to Kalher village in Bhiwandi, where we found the man, detained him and handed him over to the Naupada Police for further probe.” Police claimed to have arrested him within five hours of the crime.

The accused has been identified as Akash Kumar Pawar, 25, a resident of Kalher village, Bhiwandi. His father runs a fabrication business in Thane’s Majiwada. Akash assisted his father in the business.

The deceased girl has been identified as Prachi Vikas Zade, 20. She was repeatedly stabbed by Akash and collapsed on the busy road in a pool of blood, while he fled. Passers-by alerted police and she was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead. Her body has been sent to the civil hospital in Thane for post mortem.

Police said that Prachi succumbed to multiple injuries sustained on her neck and stomach after being stabbed with a sharp knife.

Akash and Prachi were studying in the same college and they had known each other for the past three years. Police suspect that there is a love angle to the case.

Prachi worked at a Thane office near Krishna Tower. A month ago, the accused had come to her office and allegedly beaten her up. She had approached the Kapurbawadi Police and registered a non-cognizable (NC) under Section 323, 504, 506 of the Indian Penal Code against him.

Senior Police Inspector Chandrakant Jadhav said, “Further investigation into the case is on. We will have to interrogate the accused to establish the motive behind the killing.”
