Bhayandar woman’s suicide: Husband held for abetment

-

A day after a woman leaped to death, with her three-yearold daughter in her arms, in front of a local train in Bhayandar, Navghar Police arrested her husband for abetment to suicide and dowry torture on Saturday.

The incident occurred a little past midnight on August 2. The deceased, who have been identified as Renuka Singh Yadav, 24, and Aarohi, 3, stayed in a tenement in the Gaodevi area of Bhayandar (E).

Renuka, who was standing on the south side of Platform No. 4, suddenly picked up the toddler and jumped on the tracks as a train moved out of the Bhayandar railway station at 12.17am, killing them both instantaneously.

After allegations of torture and harassment surfaced, the GRP handed over the case to their city counterparts.

Based on the complaint registered by the Renuka’s father, the police registered an offence under section 306 and 498 (a) of the IPC and arrested her husband Pintu Singh Yadav, 27, even as investigations were on to ascertain the role of her in-laws.

Renuka had married Pintu Singh in 2014. In his statement to the police, the complainant has alleged that his daughter was being subjected to mental and physical torture by her husband and inlaws to bring money for them to buy a Bullet motorbike. On the fateful day, Renuka is believed to have got involved in a heated altercation with her husband on the subject, following which she decided to take the extreme step. API Tikaram Thatkar is conducting further investigations.
