MBMC on Mission Green: City waste to be used as fertilizer

Burdened with a herculean task of disposing off more than 450 metric tonnes garbage every day, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has now rolled up its sleeves to launch a multi-pronged strategy aimed at reducing the quantum of waste.

The move could well be a double bonanza for the twin-city as it will not only resolve the problem of solid waste management disposal and conserve environment but also help promote greenery by producing organic manure in an economical and cost effective way.

The civic administration has now worked out modalities to produce manure at source from bulk and mini waste generators.

The MBMC will work under the aegis of distinguished BARC scientist Dr Sharad Kale for the success of the initiative.

While hotels, malls and other mega commercial establishments will be mandated to set up their own mechanism, the MBMC will encourage individual flat owners and smaller housing societies to set up specially designed organic waste converters.

The MBMC will rope in the Rashtriya Chemical and Fertilizers to procure compost and sell to farmers as organic fertilizer. This apart from using it for their own gardens, islands and nurseries.

“Bulk generators including hotels, banquet halls, restaaurants produce a much higher quantity of waste daily and their involvement in processing waste at the site will remove a significant portion of the wet waste transported to the city’s lone process plant in Uttan,” said MBMC chief Balaji Khatgaonkar.
