Dr Avinash Supe bags B C Roy award
MUMBAI: Dr Avinash Supe dean of the King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital and a well-known gastroenterologist has been selected for the most prestigious Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy (B C Roy) award in the category of eminent medical teacher. This is the highest award to any doctor/medical teacher in the country and award would be presented by the Indian president in New Delhi. “Its a surprise for me but I am happy as my teaching has been recognised. Moreover, it is a proud moment for me and also the medical fraternity of the state,” said Dr Supe. There are different categories like Statesmanship of the Highest Order in India, Medical man-cum-Statesman, Eminent Medical Person, Eminent person in Philosophy, Eminent person in Science and Eminent person in Arts. Dr Supe has been chosen in the category of medical teaching. It was first awarded in 1973 to Sandip Mukerjee, FRCS, of Willingdon Hospital (now Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital), New Delhi, by then President VV Giri. Dr Supe holds multiple responsibilities along with being the dean of KEM. In 2016, he was appointed as the Director of Medical Education and major BMC hospitals. He has practised as a surgical gastroenterologist who has also been a consultant with the Medical Council of India for curriculum development. Also, he co-chaired the department of medical education with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.
