If granted bail, Indrani can fly out of India, CBI tells HC

SHEENA BORA MURDER CASE

- AYESHA SHAIKH

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday vehemently opposed the bail application moved by Indrani Mukherjea, prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case. The central agency has voiced its apprehension that if granted bail, Mukherjea might fly to United Kingdom.

The submission was made in response to the plea filed by Mukherjea seeking bail on several medical grounds including her claims of 'threat to her life.' Public Prosecutor Bharat Badami said, "There is every possibility if she is granted bail, she can tamper with the prosecution witnesses. Also, we fear that she can abscond and fly out of India as she holds a British citizenship. It must not be lost sight of that she attempted to leave India even earlier."

Badami also informed the special Judge JC Jagdale that recently a prosecution witness had received a call from someone at the behest of Indrani. In response to Indrani's apprehension of threat to her life, Badami submitted, "She is safe in jail and not outside it. If she apprehends that there is some threat to her life, we can produce her through a video conference, the way underworld gangster Chhota Rajan is being produced from Tihar jail."

"Even her contention seeking bail on medical ground need not be entertained by this court as she is being provided with all possible medical help as and when required from the doctors of JJ hospital," Badami argued.

These submissions were made in response to the contentions raised by Indrani's counsel Sudeep Pasbola arguing that anything 'uncertain' can happen to his client since she is experiencing a total 'blackout.' He further argued that Indrani is not as wealthy as the CBI has been portraying her. He trashed the apprehension of the CBI that Indrani can abscond and fly out of India. Having heard the submissions advanced from both the sides, the court closed the matter for orders and is likely to pronounce the same on Wednesday.
