Suspended hospital staff ponder their fate
AS BMC AND POLICE PASS THE BUCK
The fates of two employees of the civic-run Nair Hospital continue to hang in balance after their suspension from duty for their inaction in the January 2018 incident in which a Lalbaug man, Rajesh Maru, died after being sucked into an MRI unit. Their plight is a result of the 'confusion' between Mumbai Police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Police say they want the inquiry report on the incident from the BMC before filing a chargesheet in any competent court. On the other hand, the
BMC claims the report has nothing to do with the police, who must go ahead and file the chargesheet.
The Additional Municipal Commissioner (AMC), Health, Idzes Kundan, said, they had submitted the preliminary enquiry report, after which the employees – an ayah and a ward boy, were suspended by the hospital for failing to stop Maru, who entered the MRI room with an oxygen cylinder and was sucked into the machine.
“In the month of April, a report was submitted to the concerned authorities, now, we are conducting an internal administrative enquiry. This enquiry is nothing to do with the police and legal proceedings, as it is for internal documentation. Police can take action on the basis of preliminary reports,” added Kundan.
Senior Police Inspector Savlaram Agawane of Agripada police station said civic officials had failed to submit the reports despite repeated reminders and letters.
“On the basis of medical reports, we can file the chargesheet, but civic officials claim they have submitted the report, due to which the entire case is on hold,” he said.
