- STAFF REPORTER

In separate incidents, two girls hanged themselves to death in two areas close to each other on Saturday. While the incidents are not even remotely related, the two girls ended their lives in the same way.

In the first incident, the 16year-old girl committed suicide by hanging herself with a dupatta from a ceiling fan after getting scolded by her mother. The police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR).

Shalani Bekhuri, a standard X student of AES School, on Saturday afternoon returned to her King Circle home distressed. She allegedly had a fight with her mother over a trivial issue of working hard and preparing better for the Board exams. After the fight, when Shalani’s mother left home to run a few errands around 3pm, she allegedly took the extreme step, said police.

The family and neighbours rushed her to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Her mother informed the police about the incident. A suicide note written in Telegu was recovered. Sion police registered an ADR into the matter.

In the second incident, 13year-old Julie Sharma, a standard VI student of BMCrun KD Gaikwad School was a resident of Sion Koliwada. It is alleged that Julie’s teacher Anil Pal had insulted her in the class on Saturday. Upon her return to her home, she narrated the incident to her parents and cried her heart out about feeling ashamed and hurt due to the insult. Later, she hanged herself

On Sunday, Julie’s parents and other family members protested outside the police station demanding to register a case against teacher Anil Pal, who had insulted their daughter, which drove her to suicide. The police booked Pal for abetment of suicide under Sec 306, IPC.

Both the incidents happened in Zone 4 of Mumbai police on Saturday. Commenting on the development in probe into the cases, N Ambika, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) said, “The police are investigating the two incidents. In the Sion suicide case, we are trying to translate the letter from Telegu to English/ Hindi/Marathi, which will shed light on the reason of the suicide. In another case, we have booked the teacher for abetment of suicide. He will soon be arrested.”
