The ten-headed effigy of the vanquished Ravana will go up in flames. Goddess Durga, her victory and worship complete, will be given a tearful send-off. The nine sacred days of celebration will culminate in the finale. Dassera, which stems from ‘Dasha Hara’, the defeat of the ten – will be complete. And its significance will continue to resonate…

Dassera comes with multiple lessons for life. These 9 days of Navratri are replete with symbolism.

They have been a time of self-reflection, maintaining of silence and observance of fasting.

While fasting drains the system of toxins, silent meditation brings awareness and purifies the mind and speech. On a deeper level, this special period reminds us to vanquish the evil lurking within ourselves, and to respect all aspects of life, and the things that contribute to our wellbeing.

As yogi and mystic Sadhguru explains, the nine days of Navratri are classified according to the three basic qualities of tamas, rajas and sattva. The first three days are tamas, where the goddess is

fierce, like Durga and Kali. The following three days are dedicated to Lakshmi, who symbolises gentleness mingled with material abundance. The final three days are dedicated to sattva, to goddess Saraswati, related to knowledge and enlightenment. Investing in each of these qualities brings a different kind of power.

However, eventually, when one goes beyond their pursuit, it brings liberation. The tenth day of Vijayadashmi then signifies a winning over these qualities minus a fight. It is time to attune our body and mind to become aware of the need to live in reverence and gratefulness towards everything we are blessed with. An attitude of gratitude leads to success and victory.

From the earth we walk on, nature, which fulfils our every basic need, to those we come in contact with; our families, our work… being conscious of our blessings will only enhance our personal happiness. Living in this state of bliss will bring fulfilment in every walk of life. As we string up garlands of bright marigolds on our doorways, it is time to welcome Dassera with vibrancy, joy and love.
