Man jumps in path of fast local at Byculla, dies
A 45-year-old man committed suicide by jumping in front of a Thane-bound train at Byculla station’s Platform 3 on Monday. Railway officials said the Government Railway Police (GRP) is investigating the case, as they are yet to establish the motive behind the suicide.
In CCTV footage of the incident, the man can be seen pacing about on the empty platform for a while before deciding to jump on the tracks just as the train was about to pass by. An official said, “The man jumped on to the tracks and was hit by the fast local. The train stopped after going over
his body but as it was moving at high speed it was not possible to stop in time to avert the tragedy. It was a fast train which was not scheduled to halt at Byculla station. It took 45 minutes to retrieve the body of the deceased, as it was entangled between the wheels. This delayed other services by about 40 minutes.”
The identity of the deceased was established through his Aadhaar card -- Bharat Manoharlal Jain, 45, a resident of Kamathipura. The body was immediately sent to St George Hospital for a postmortem. An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered by the GRP as the cause for the suicide is yet unknown. A railway official said, “We are investigating the case and have informed his family.”
Dr Madhukar Gaikwad, medical superintendent of St George Hospital said the deceased was brought dead and the body was split in two. “A post-mortem has been conducted and we are waiting for his family to claim the body,” he said.
