MU Law students relieved as HC stays implementation of 60:40 exam pattern
Students studying Law in Mumbai University (MU) have been finally relieved as the Bombay High Court (HC) stayed the implementation of 60:40 marks examination pattern on Monday. Students will now continue to have 100 marks examination pattern with a major focus on theory.
Students of Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB) were distressed due to the new circular issued by MU in August. This circular stated a new 60:40 marking scheme for examination pattern wherein 60 marks were assigned for theory and remaining 40 marks were allotted for internal tests and projects. Students protested this new marking pattern and filed a writ petition on October 9 agitating over this new scheme. Nirmal Kamte, a student claimed, “As most of us are doing internships at various law firms or working as trainees under advocates we do not have sufficient time for projects, assignments or internal tests. Law course needs practical exposure and it is important for us to understand court procedures so we need time to gain a learning experience.”
In addition, students revealed large number of faculty members in Law courses are practising lawyers who serve as visiting faculty or guest lecturers in various law colleges. Shraddha Jain, another student added, “Our teachers do not have time to assess our examination answer sheets on time and there is a delay every year in declaring our results. So how can we expect them to conduct internal tests and award assignments? We are glad the court has stood by us and supported us.”
