Cop gets dose of his own medicine

- VIKAS NAG

Usually it is the Mumbai police who barricade roads, deploy traffic and ordinary police to nab all the bikers to book for speeding and not wearing helmets. On Sunday night, it was role reversal. Police too are law breakers and a trio who tried to pin down a cop were instead of being appreciated twiddling thumbs behind bars. Mumbai police have treated anyone trying to teach a policeman few rules as accused.

Nirmal Nagar police have registered case against three accused, identified as, Pawan Ashok Sayyedani, Ashok Vilas Gawas and Vishwas Satu Shirodkar for forcing an on-duty constable Pandhrinath Ramu Alder (54) to wear a helmet while he was riding his patrolling motor cycle near the Prajakta building in Kherwadi in Bandra west on February 3.

During most nakabandi times, police make bikers pay a fine for violating the traffic rules such as not wearing a helmet, jumping

signals, or for some other offence. On Sunday night, as per a video made by few eye witnesses, a man is seen to snatch away the key of a beat marshall who was about to start his motorcycle. Upset with the police for having charged him of Rs 1000 in a same offence, Sayyedani is seen aggressively challenging Alder.

"Mei nahi doonga, helmet kidhar hai. Mere se Rs 1000

liya tha, dusrey ko sikhane ke pehle khud pehno." (I will not give the key. Where is your helmet? wear it, they took Rs 1000 from me). Alder is seen wearing a helmet given by a son of a policeman and he is seen asking for the bike keys. Sayyedani refuses saying, "First go and sit on your bike," after which he hands over the key. At the end he heard using a cuss word.

During the entire episode of a verbal duel and resistance to hand over the key, Sayyedani has not abused, making the charge seem more like vengeful.

A case has been registered against the three accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), punishment for wrongful restraint (341), using criminal force to stop a public servant from conducting his duties (353), common intention (34). While the case is under sections of Maharashtra Police Act, 110 and 112 and liquor prevention act 85 has also been registered.
