Vacant top post cripples MBMC’s education wing

- SURESH GOLANI /

Enhancing the standard of education in civic schools does not seem to be a top priority of the government.

Already grappling with the dwindling student enrollment every year, the education department in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), which works under the aegis of the Zila Parishad (ZP), is lying headless for two months.

After serving the MBMC for less than six months, the education officer, Bhaskar Babar, deputed by the ZP was promoted and transferred in December, 2018. Since then, the post is lying vacant.

As a result, important dayto-day work has been put on the back-burner impacting the overall functioning of the education department.

Although, MBMC’s social welfare officer has been asked to shoulder the responsibility, the stop gap arrangement and the existing dispensation is unable to take crucial decisions. With board examinations round the corner, the vacuum is set to push the education wing into a deeper crisis.

Demanding urgent filling up of the vacancy, a delegation representing the students wing of MNS met the deputy civic chief, Vijay Mhasaal, on Wednesday and threatened to launch an agitation. “The civic administration is keeping itself updated on the issue. It is learnt that officers who were assigned with the duty were reluctant to work here,” revealed an MBMC official, requesting anonymity.
