Painting the town red...

WHAT: Perhaps, the first thing you will notice as you enter the festival is the aroma of kumkum. The smell overpowers the humdrum of the festival and pulls you into a sweet nostalgic trip. The uncanny fragrance is thanks to Mumbai artist, Hetal Shukla’s latest art installation. He proudly stands next to ‘Laal’, an Ambassador car wrapped up in almost 50 kgs of kumkum. The car is his inquiry into the humble moral system that Lal Bahadur Shastri and his wife, Lalita Shastri solidly stood by in their lives. The installation’s social impact, much like it’s fragrance, is overwhelming. Shukla is no stranger to an overwhelmed audience. Being an artist since the past 22 years, he has created almost 5,000 artworks that can be found everywhere from art galleries to the offices of Google and Cadbury. This is his 11th year as part of Kala Ghoda’s art roster and his dedication to using the Ambassador as a metaphor. One of his cars is displayed at the Heritage Museum of Transportation in Delhi.
