GLOBAL SPORT EVENT, BUT NO LOUDSPEAKERS

The organisers of the firstever international level Mallakhamb championship were on Friday disappointed after the Bombay High Court denied them permission to use loudspeakers at the event, which will be held in Shivaji Park, Dadar.

This means, the world’s first such event will take place "in silence," that is without any use of loudspeakers.

The event will take place on February 16 and 17 and draw visitors from Asia and Europe.

According to the organisers, Vishwa Mallakhamb Federation, a minimum of 5000 spectators might gather to watch the performances, which will start at 8 am and conclude at 8 pm.

After getting all the requisite permissions for the event, the organisers had filed a separate application for the use of loudspeakers. They claimed that given the

expected footfall, they might use loudspeakers to instruct not only the participants, but also onlookers.

The BMC, however, denied them permission, citing the HC ruling on effective implementation of Noise Pollution Rules 2002.

According to these rules, no one can use loudspeakers in a silence zone.

Aggrieved, the organisers had petitioned the High Court.
