Sibal is caught on both sides of Ambani fence
Advocate and Congress leader Kapil Sibal found himself on both sides of the fence on Tuesday. He was defending Anil Ambani in court as a senior lawyer, on the same day he was attacking the industrialist on the Rafale controversy outside.
Sibal, 70, was appearing for Anil Ambani in the Supreme Court for a hearing on a contempt petition filed against the Reliance Communication chairman by Ericsson India over unpaid dues amounting to Rs. 550 crore. Sibal argued in the court that no contempt of court is made out against Ambani.
Asked to explain, Sibal said to NDTV: "I was representing Reliance Communications against Ericsson and this has nothing to do with Rafale.
This is a corporate fight and Anil Ambani is the MD. I have been appearing for them for 20 years."
In 2017, Kapil Sibal's dual role was source of some embarrassment to his party. He had represented the All India Muslim Personal Law Board in the triple talaq case in the Supreme Court. Earlier, he had defended the Trinamool Congress in the Saradha scam when Rahul Gandhi was attacking Mamata Banerjee for corruption.
Sibal loves to wear two hats and manages to switch them deftly, too.
