Body exhumed after 4 yrs

Four years after the police found a body in a canal in Loni, Ahmednagar, and buried it in a field in the area as it was unclaimed, they have now exhumed the body and sent it to King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital, Mumbai, for a forensic examination.

According to police, they found this body in 2015 and the post-mortem report then had suggested the cause of death to be compression of the neck. Now, after exhumation of the body, DNA tests will be conducted in Nashik.

The exhumed body has been kept at the KEM mortuary and a forensic examination will be conducted to determine the sex, age and stature of the deceased, according to a hospital source.

In 2015, a forensic team in Ahmednagar had obtained dental impressions from the remains, but failed to conduct DNA tests. “It will be difficult to find the cause of death because there is no flesh on the body, as it was exhumed after five years,” said the hospital source. The left femur (thigh bone) has been handed over to Loni Police to match with the DNA and blood samples of the body. Inspector Pravin Patil, Loni police station said, “Four years ago, they had received a missing person complaint of a 50-yearold man, who was mentally disturbed. Police suspect the body may be that of the missing person. Accordingly, they are going to obtain blood samples from the family which had lodged a missing complaint.”
