129 Chembur buildings on MHADA layout told to submit OCs within 10 days

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has notified all 129 buildings located at its Tilak Nagar, Chembur, layout to submit their occupancy certificates (OCs) within the next ten days.

According to a MHADA official, the move has come following the fire which broke out last December, at Sargam, a high-rise in Chembur. This mishap exposed how residents of several housing societies are living in buildings without valid OCs.

At Tilak Nagar too, the MHADA officials believe that residents are residing without proper OCs. The chief officer of the MHADA’s Mumbai Board, Deependra Singh Kushwah said, “Residents of all Mumbai buildings without OCs must ensure they get their structure regularised or prepare to face action.”

The MHADA official said except for seven-eight buildings, other buildings have already been redeveloped. “Earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) used to grant the OC, but from 2018, MHADA has been given this power and accordingly, we have initiated this drive. We have also asked the BMC to hand over files of those buildings on our layout for detailed investigation.”

Residents must furnish details to the MHADA’s Kurla division office and if a building does not have proper OC, they will have to rectify the situation and get the certificate from MHADA, informed an official. The Free Press Journal had reported that Kushwaha had asked his executive engineers to prepare a list of buildings on MHADA layout that were occupied without an OC, after the Chembur fire mishap .
