Wife kills son, herself: Man held for abetment

- PRIYANKA NAVALKAR /

Two days after Anuja Vanjari (30) killed her threeyear-old son and hanged herself in Kurla (W), the Vinoba Bhave (VB) Nagar police has filed a case of abetment to suicide and criminal intent with a married woman against husband Deepak. Police have detained the him and are investigating the matter while waiting for the postmortem report.

On Monday evening, Anuja first strangled her three-year-old son and then committed suicide by hanging herself with a duppata on an iron rod at their Kurla residence. Hours later when her mother-inlaw, who works at the Mumbai International airport, returned, repeated doorbells went unanswered. She alerted the neighbours who peeped through the window and saw Anuja hanging.

Anuja’s mother-in-law and neighbours called police and the fire brigade, who broke the door open. Police and Anuja’s family were shocked to see she had killed her son before ending her life.

Deepak and Anuja had also got into a fight at a wedding function on Monday afternoon, after which Anuja is suspected to have killed her son and committed suicide, said police. Uttam Kolekar, ACP (Kurla division) said, “We have brought in Deepak for questioning and he has been booked under relevant IPC sections pertaining to abetment to suicide (309) and detaining a married woman with criminal intent (498). Probe is on. Appropriate action will follow after the autopsy reports ascertain the cause of death.”

VB Nagar police detained Deepak on Wednesday afternoon after Anuja’s mother protested outside police station demanding a case be registered against her son-in-law, Deepak. Anuja’a mother told police Deepak had been harassing her for money and the couple had marital problems.
