5% QUOTA BILL GETS NOD IN RAJASTHAN

- — Prakash Bhandari

JAIPUR: The Ashok Gehlot government on Wednesday yielded before the agitating Gujjar community by hurriedly passing a Bill earmarking 5% quota in jobs and education for them. However, that is easier said than done. The State legislature has to send this bill to the Centre, so that they can introduce a Constitutional amendment, as was the case with the 10 per cent quota. A part of the problem is that Rajasthan has already touched the 50 per cent ceiling on reservation. The move will also benefit certain backward castes which were until now provided with just one per cent reservation from within the 50 per cent quota pie.
