- —Suresh Golani

BHAYANDAR: A 48-year-old housewife from Bhayandar became the latest victim of cyber-crime when she lost `73,988 to a debit card fraud. According to the FIR, the woman received a call from a man posing as a bank representative informing her of renewal due date of the debit-cum-ATM card. After extracting confidential card details, the caller convinced her and her son to forward the text messages comprising one-time passwords, which were later used for three fraudulent withdrawals. The woman learnt about the transactions when she approached her bank, two days later to get the new ATM card as instructed by the caller. Based on the complaint, an FIR was lodged on Thursday under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code at Bhayandar. Sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act-2000 were also slapped for identity theft and impersonation.
