Auto drivers beat up 2 traffic cops in Nagpur

NAGPUR: Autoricksh­aw drivers assaulted two traffic policemen opposite the Ganeshpeth bus stop in Nagpur on Wednesday. A video of the shocking incident was circulated on social media. Prakash Sonawane and Kishore Dhapke were the two policemen who were attacked. Ganeshpeth police has registered an offence and arrested two autoricksh­aw drivers, Mayur Rajurkar and Sonu Kamble. Ganeshpeth is a busy locality with heavy traffic. State buses keep plying in this area. Apart from autos, many private vehicles too are parked illegally. After repeated complaints, traffic police began penalising and issuing challans and were seen putting jammers on cars on Wednesday. Amid their duties, they were accosted by Rajurkar and Kamble and an argument ensued. Soon, matters escalated and the auto drivers became violent and the duo assaulted Sonawane and Dhapke. They tore the uniform of one and beat Dhapke mercilessl­y. Ganeshpeth police arrested them. In the past also the traffic police has been attacked. On Tuesday, there was an incident wherein a youth attacked a policeman at Samvidhan Chowk. Residents and members of the opposition parties have expressed shock at the failing law and order in the hometown of CM Fadnavis.
