Will sell treated water to industries @Rs 55 per 1,000 litres: MbPT

ONLY BPCL HAS SHOWN INTEREST IN BUYING THIS TREATED WATER

The Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), which has proposed to set up a sewage treatment plant (STP) in its Tejas Nagar Colony in Wadala, plans to sell the treated water to industrial units located on its land.

According to an MbPT official, "Only Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has shown interest in buying this treated water. So, it will be supplied to them for fifteen years, once the plant begins operation. We plan to quote a price of Rs 55 per 1000 litres."

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 17cr, with Rs 8 cr of this amount to be set aside for operations and maintenance.

The earlier tender for the survey, investigation, design, construction, testing and commissioning of the STP was cancelled in December, and a fresh tender has been called. "Although the last date for submission of bids is February 28, it will be extended by another 15 days."

The MbPT is cautiously optimistic about the project viability in terms of revenue. "Already the BMC is reviving its STPs. Moreover, they too have sent notices to industrial units, like we have, to buy the non-potable water from their plants. Since we have the BMC as a competitor, we are trying to price our product competitively," said the MbPT official.
