Although it is a popular game bird, its population remains largely unaffected due to the developmen­t of artificial nesting boxes and conservati­on of its natural habitat in North America. The wood duck is a colourful bird found in the wooded swamps and ponds of North America. It is considered to be the most beautiful of the waterfowls in the continent.

The male of the species has multicolou­red plumage and red eyes while the female has a white eyering and is less colourful. When the male moults, usually in summer, its plumage resembles that of the female.
