Cash-back bait dangled to dupe woman

- — Suresh Golani

BHAYANDAR: Crooks are apparently adapting themselves continuously to devise new techniques to execute online frauds. A 35year-old woman housewife from Kashimira became the latest target of cyber-crime as she fell prey to a cash-back bait dangled by a dubious travel portal and lost Rs 68,000 to the online banking fraud. According to the FIR registered at the local police, the woman who had recently travelled to an international destination, received an email offering Rs 2,000 as cash back towards her flight booking. The complainant established contact with the helpline numbers and the caller under the pretext of effecting the redemption, convinced the woman to forward the text messages comprising one-time passwords which were later used to conduct five fraudulent transfers amounting Rs 68,000 to various banks and e-wallets. Based on the complaint, the Kashimira police registered a case under Section 420 of the IPC on Tuesday.
