Man arrested for inappropriately touching woman on moving train
To escape from him, she leapt out of the ladies’ compartment
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway police arrested a 27-yearold man on Monday evening, for inappropriately touching and outraging the modesty of a 30 year-old woman passenger on a running local train on February 9. The woman had jumped off the ladies' coach of the moving train near Masjid station in order to escape being attacked and in the process, she had sustained several injuries.
The accused has been identified as Ashraf Ali Shaikh, 27, a resident of Sion-Koliwada.
"In her injured state, she walked on the tracks to Masjid station, approached police on duty and narrated the incident. She was immediately rushed to St George’s Hospital in Fort area. A case was registered against an unidentified accused and the CCTV camera footage of all adjoining areas including Dongri, JJ Marg and VP Road were checked thoroughly,” said the deputy commissioner of police, Western Railway, Purushottam Karad.
Police had also distributed photographs of Shaikh at major junctions of south Mumbai and a network of police informers was activated to nab him at the earliest. On Monday, the police received a tipoff that Shaikh would arrive at Churchgate station, following which a trap was laid to arrest him. “After the arrest, Shaikh was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for outraging the modesty of a woman (section 354) and causing grievous hurt by endangering life of others (section 338) along with other relevant sections of the Railways Act," said Karad.
Shaikh has been remanded in police custody till Saturday.
