UP bus collides with truck, 16 killed, 35 injured

The bus was enroute from Bihar to Delhi, it took three hours to remove injured and dead from the mangled bus

In a freak road accident between a double decker sleeper bus and a stationary truck Wednesday night, 16 people lost their lives and 35 injured in Firozabad district on Agra-Lucknow Expressway.

Over 55 persons were on board in the private bus enroute to Motihari, Bihar from Delhi. Over 10 of them are serious. They are being treated at Saifai Postgrad Medical Institute.

Such was severity of the collision that almost front half of the bust turned into mesh. Locals and cops rushed to remove the injured and dead persons from the wrecked bus.

“It took almost three hours to remove the injured persons who were stuck in the mangled remains of the bus and were unconscious. The entire scene was horrendous,” says an official.

The officials said that the identity of the victims and deceased were being ascertained. Driver of the truck who was reportedly changing the punctured tyre after parking the bus on extreme lane was killed in the mishap as the bus coming from behind hit the truck on rear side.

Most people were asleep when the mishap happened late night. The passengers who tried to contact others over phone to inform about the incident and seek help, were clueless about the spot which reportedly delayed the rescue measures.

Despite strict actions being taken by the central and state governments in the direction of traffic regulation and reform, the number of accidents taking place in the country is not dropping as expected.

Inspector General Range Agra A. Satish Ganesh told media persons, “The bus was in high speed and the driver probably dozed off and couldn't apply brakes in time.” Another official said that the truck driver was also at fault as he parked the vehicle on extreme right side to change the tire instead of parking it on extreme left lane.
