1,382 new cases in city, 41 deaths in last 24 hrs

Maharashtr­a recorded 2,345 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, taking its overall toll to 41,642. The state has recorded 22,000 cases in the last 12 days, more than doubling the rate in less than a third of the time it took to record the first 20,000 cases (58 days).

There were 64 deaths recorded in the state in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of fatalities to 1,454. As many as 41 people died in Mumbai, nine in Malegaon, seven in Pune, three in Aurangabad, two in Navi Mumbai and one each in PimpriChin­chwad and Solapur.

Mumbai recorded 1,382 new cases with 41 deaths on Thursday and the overall count is now at 25,500, including 882 deaths.”

BMC officails said so far 6751 positive cases have recovered & discharged till now, of which 5524 cases are discharged from various municipal hospitals and 1227 cases discharged from private hospital. “Among admitted cases 28 per cent are discharged in which 46 per cent are women & 54 per cen are men,” said Dr Daksha Shah, deputy executive health officer.

However, the doubling rate of cases has slowed down to 13 days, improving from last month, when it took just six to seven days for the number of cases to double.

Health officials have estimated that in the next six months, only 0.5 per cent of the population will be infected in Maharashtr­a. "We will have to wait for the monsoon to see how Covid-19 fares in the presence of other viruses," said Dr Pradeep Awate, state epidemiolo­gist.

Of the 3,19,710 laboratory samples, 2,78,068 were negative and 41,642 have been tested positive. Currently, 4,37,304 people are in home quarantine and 26,865 people are in institutio­nal quarantine. So far, 11,726 have recovered and been discharged.
