Massive fire at UK port

NEWHAVEN: A huge fire broke out in East Sussex with massive thick clouds of smoke seen for miles. Fire and rescue crews were called at around 9.30am on Saturday to reports of a huge blaze in Newhaven which could be seen as far as Brighton. Officials said that an industrial building was found alight and has since been evacuated.

A major fire was reported on Beach Road in Newhaven in the United Kingdom at around 9.30 am on Saturday, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said. The incident is said to have occurred at an industrial unit.

The fire department said, "We are attending a fire on Beach Road in Newhaven. We were first alerted at 9.32 & we've received more than 30, 999 calls about it. Please avoid the area while we work."

We have been working with Lewes District Council, Newhaven Port and Sussex Police, it added.

The department sent 12 fire engines at the spot. "We have 12 fire engines at the incident in Newhaven. The fire is affecting an industrial building. No reports of injuries. Please avoid the area," the fire department said.

The fire department said, "The hard work continues at #Newhaven - good progress has been made - we are likely to remain on scene for the rest of the afternoon."

The cause is not known but will be investigat­ed.

Dramatic video footage and images from the scene showed plumes of dark grey smoke billowing from the building, reports The Mirror.

People in the area were warned to keep their windows and doors shut as fire crews were dealing with the serious fire.

"We know the weather's hot, but the smoke is very unpleasant and may affect you," the spokespers­on said.
